Men should dress to reflect their lifestyle choices and not their age, according to one leading fashion house. Age is just a number and does not necessarily reflect a man’s current position in life. That, and how you want the world to see you, should be the major factors in how you dress, according to national menswear brand Douglas & Grahame. Whilst there are many older men we could look to for style pointers, it is not your age but your lifestyle and priorities which should stand out in the way you dress.

What Men Should Be Wearing - The Clothes Maiden

Being in your 20s for some people means getting into a profession, buying a first home and maybe starting a family. But others of the same age are already business leaders and entrepreneurs. Some men in their 60s are determined to continue working, refusing to give up their place at the grindstone, while others are already retired and enjoying a slower pace of life.

So, says Sales Director Anton Jenkins, it is what you do and how you do it that should determine your sense of style, not the year you were born. However, adds Anton, there are still guidelines you can follow to avoid any style errors along the way. “Whatever your style you need to know which are the go-to brands for you and how to make them work together,” he says. We have some really stylish customers who in their 40s could wear the same as a 20-year-old counterpart, but they know how to dress it and carry it and that makes a difference.

“David Beckham is probably one of the most stylist men out there and yet he’s had some fashion bloopers of his own in the past. But these days he picks clothes from a broad range of brands and makes them work because he understands his own inner style. “Dermot O’Leary has become probably the best dressed television presenter in the country because he takes items which in the past might have been made with a specific age range in mind – skinny jeans for teenagers, flat cap for country gents – and makes them his own. He always dresses the part.” Older style icons like Brit actor Bill Nighy, know how to mix it up and be original because they understand their own look. “Try out the trends by all means, but don’t go over the top. Keep it simple and experiment with little touches at a time,” adds Anton.

“Growing older doesn’t have to mean getting boring with your style, just make sure you understand yourself and the person you want to portray, shop around for the basics, invest in some stylish signature pieces and above all else get fitted. “As we age our bodies change whether we like it or not. Whatever your sense of style there’s nothing worse than wearing something ill-fitting because you’re still squeezing into the same size clothes.  “Visit any independent menswear specialist on the High Street at every stage of your life. Understanding and accepting your body is the first step to understanding your own unique sense of style.” As a market leader the Douglas brand is synonymous with consistent excellence, quality and style.  Their collections are aimed at the discerning man who likes to look sharp, sophisticated and suitably attired at all times.
