Katcha Bilek is a quirky, UK-based sustainable fashion brand that produces durable bags and accessories made from repurposed materials. Designed for a busy urban lifestyle, their ethos is: ‘Make a difference to social and environmental issues in fashion’.
Based in Bristol, the robust and versatile brand sources reclaimed inner tubes, bike tyres, safety belts and rubber mats to create amazingly unique pieces you certainly won’t see on the high street. All raw materials are sourced locally and the whole manufacturing process is completed in the UK. A strong focus on design and aesthetic is evident throughout with bag straps that were once car seat belts, unusual key chains formed from ring pulls and slick, unisex bike tyre belts.

Products for spring/summer ’14 include a limited, stand-out Red Inner Tube Bag and the ‘Natalia’, a smooth, clean-cut studded tote. Our favourite design for the new season is the ‘Ade’– a smart, two-compartment backpack featuring silver buckles and strong hand stitching that oozes androgynous chic.

Continuing classics include the ‘Lisa’ and ‘Carmen’ bags; the former emphasising a handcrafted, asymmetrical front flap giving an avant-garde look. Bohemian satchel ‘Carmen’ was inspired by Katcha’s travels in Spain. Its versatility and brass stud detailing guarantees an interesting twist to any ensemble – be it casual or evening. A waterproof finish adds to its functionality and ease of wear making it practical yet modish. Both bags feature the signature seat belt shoulder strap.

The alternative designer is also a purveyor of collars made from materials otherwise deemed unusable. Several versions are available with detailing including intricate perforated holes and decorative studding to contrast with the sturdy base material. Simple but stylish, these neckpieces emit an edgy vibe for the fashion-forward female.
The creative design portfolio extends to crafted furniture, innovative lighting installations and even sculptured, life-size crocodiles providing an appeal to all ages. The brand is also supplying 42 custom-made men’s goodie bags for this year’s BRIT Awards to each performer, presenter and winner. Katcha Bilek grasps the essence of recycling by maximising the material’s potential and creating bespoke pieces that are durable and refined. With each item being both environmentally friendly and affordable, it’s well worth investigating.
