Designer Spotlight: Satu Maaranen

Master of Arts, Satu Maaranen is a Helsinki based fashion designer. Maaranen graduated in 2012 from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her graduate collection won first prize at the prestigious Hyères Fashion Festival 2013 by unanimous decision. 

Her work has been featured in Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, The Business of Fashion, Interview Magazine, L’Officiel, Women’s Wear Daily, Untitled Magazine, i-D online, Marie Claire, Showstudio and numerous other print and online publications. Her work has also been showcased in exhibitions and in print, including special upcoming projects with filmmakers commissioned by Vogue Italia.  

True to her Finnish roots, Satu values craftsmanship and creates a striking aesthetic by contrasting traditional Haute Couture – dramatic hats, exaggerated bows with sculptural proportions – with work wear inspired shapes and earthy cottons. Oversized brushstroke patterns, textural finishes and bold colour juxtapositions add even more depth to a truly intriguing collection, leaving us excited for what’s next for this up and coming designer.
