A few years ago, the idea of a cycling holiday to many may have been daunting, but now with cycling becoming more popular during the pandemic, 25% of Brits are considering a cycling getaway, with 21% more likely to book a cycling holiday this year than last year, according to Trainline. With the days getting colder, now is the perfect time to book a holiday to warmer climes, and the UK’s leading e-bike engineers, Swytch Technology, have provided the ultimate guide to cycling destinations where riders can still enjoy the sun throughout the winter months.

1. Mallorca, Spain

Amongst professional cyclists, Mallorca is the place to be in the winter months. With over 300 days of sun every year, warm weather is almost guaranteed, and the cycling never disappoints, either. With a variety of routes, from mountains to flat coastal roads, Mallorca really is a cyclist’s paradise, and as such, there’s plenty of infrastructure to help along the way. There are specialist cycling tours and, should you need it, bike shops for any technical gremlins you may encounter. Perfect roads, great food, sun and cycling – what are you waiting for?

2. Boulder, Colorado

It’s not as easy to get to as sunny Spain, but if you want to experience cycling on the other side of the pond, there’s no better place than Boulder, Colorado. It’s often touted as the heartland of cycling in the United States and it’s easy to see why. Plenty of sunshine, legendary hills and the scenery of the iconic Rocky Mountains make it a cyclist’s dream, and as such, it’s been home to many of the US’s top professional cyclists for years. There’s plenty of bike shops, dedicated bike paths and, of course, enough cafes to satisfy any cyclist’s coffee stop demands!

3. Crete, Greece

Greece has long been underestimated as a cycling destination. With flatter routes along the scenic coast, and temples that come straight from the ancient world, Crete’s rolling hills and stunning scenery should not be overlooked. In fact, with there being so many islands in Greece, cycling can be the perfect way to experience the island-hopping life, and take in stunning vistas.

4. Sicily, Italy

Sicily is iconic when it comes to the world of professional bike racing, and though the thought of steep climbs may seem daunting, they’re accessible at any level with the use of electric assistance, and once you reach the top of the mountains the views will definitely be worth it. What’s more, there are plenty of coastal routes which are flatter, should you wish to avoid hilly terrain altogether. Because of the rich cycling history in the area, there are also plenty of accommodating hotels, as well as dedicated cycling tours for all levels.

5. Portugal

With plenty of sunshine, good food and scenery, it’s a wonder why more cyclists don’t flock to the west-coast of the Iberian Peninsula every year, though this is fast changing. Every year more cycle paths are made, with dedicated cycling hotels popping up all over Portugal, too, and there are even cycling specific tours around the country. Stay in the inner-cities, and within a few kilometres, you’ll be in the hills, soaking in the scenery.

Whilst having different levels of fitness could be a barrier for some groups when it comes to taking active holidays, Swytch have devised a solution that allows you to keep up with your friends or family, even if they are fitter than you. E-bikes are as much fun as any conventional bike, allowing you to keep up with even the fittest cyclists. Whilst it is less strenuous on the body, e-biking helps you burn 70% of the calories that you would from traditional cycling, according to an AMCA study. The Swytch kit dramatically reduces the price of quality e-bikes, with prices starting from £549, enabling anyone to travel electric for as little as 0.4 pence per mile by up-cycling their existing bike.
