Fashion is such a subjective matter that it can be hard to ensure you won’t be making a fashion faux pas when you head for the slopes this winter. The first thing you need to ensure when you’re planning your ski getaway is that your clothing and equipment for the slopes are as comfortable and safe as possible. Then you can think about your après ski activities and what to wear.

On the Slopes

look2-on-the-slopesFirst you need to decide how visible you want to be. For many skiers and snowboarders, the cool look of blues and grays are a stylish statement of, well, cool. Jackets and pants in these colours, as well as pants in black, give you a patina of insouciance. You know what you are doing and where you’re going, and you’re good at it too.

These colours do look good, but what many are wanting, as they head off into the snowy wilderness, is something that will catch the eye if there’s a problem. If you’re doing off piste skiing, boarding or cross country work, then visibility from the air is a sensible thing to consider for your safety, and to make it easier for those searching for you if you get into difficulties. This is where vibrant oranges and neon’s come to the fore. They’re stylish and they also mean that when you’re on piste, others can easily see you and, if necessary, avoid you!

Look for pants that have a dedicated padded pocket above the right knee for an avalanche beacon and make sure that your waterproofing material is breathable and robust. You also need to make sure that your ski boots are a good fit, will give you comfort and support and where possible, will form closely to your own foot.

Ski helmets are obviously essential and you can check out the types available at skis.com and other winter sports sites. Look for a helmet that gives you good vision and one that also has a high safety rating in case of a hard impact. Styles and colours vary, but always look for a helmet that fits you well, is comfortable, not too heavy and gives good ventilation.

Off the Slopes

If you’re out and about, you will need to keep warm, so think of your outerwear as well as what you would want for a restaurant or the dance floor. If you’re female, you can look ultra-chic in a little black dress, but a mix of stylish jeans and a smart, striped black and white top will always hit the right note.
