With its interesting architecture, spectacular scenery and one of the most popular cuisines, Italy is a top holiday destination. But where do Italians choose to holiday in Italy, are there hidden gems yet to discover?

The newspaper and magazine app Readly has shown an increase in searches for dream destinations in Italy, amongst its Italian subscribers. Readly, has compiled a list of the most trending destinations this year from searches across the 8,000 titles on its app.

Gorizia and Pompeii top the list

The most popular search amongst Readly’s Italian readers is Gorizia, a medieval border town in northeastern Italy with rich cultural heritage and exciting history. In 1947, after World War II, a city was split into two, becoming Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia). The so-called twin cities have been named one of the European capitals of culture in 2025.

In second place among the most searched destinations is up Pompeii, a destination that tends to attract those fascinated by archeology and ancient history. Just a few months ago, an archaeological find was made: a luxurious private bathhouse with several pools believed to have belonged to a top politician of the ancient city.

Other favourite destinations

Versilia, Gargano, Via Francigena, Cinque Terre and the northern Italian lakes are also among the most popular Italian destinations across the travel magazines on Readly. Issues about the following destinations are particularly popular:

  • Versilia, a Tuscan resort sandwiched between the Apuan Alps and sandy beaches
  • Gargano, a mountainous peninsula in eastern Italy
  • Via Francigena, a pilgrimage route that runs through Tuscany – from Lucca to Siena
  • Cinque Terre, an area made up of five small Italian villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore
  • Lakes of Northern Italy; Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, Lake Iseo, Lake Garda and Lake Lugano.

“We see a clear increase in searches for various destinations across the magazines on our platform at this time of year as travel planning is underway. With the help of the travel magazines’ reports, it becomes easy to find inspiration, discover new destinations and read about why Gorizia and Pompeii in particular are worth a visit,” says Chris Couchman, Head of Client Services at Readly
