Eleanor Bolton, British jewellery and accessories designer based in London developed a craft technique involving coiling and hand stitching cotton rope to create lightweight tactile jewellery. Her 2015 Memphis collection launching this March introduces vibrant and fluorescent splashes of colour to her innovative jewellery designs from her studied method of jewellery creation.

Supplementing the traditional subtle grey and navy tones, the latest range is inspired by the graphic and colourful patterns of the Memphis group, an Italian design group who created post-modern fabrics and furniture in the 80’s. Eleanor’s jewellery, intricate in the intuitive approach to the micro details of its making process and precise scale, results in its designs being of sculptural quality.

The delicate technique that involves close attention to the use of coiling and hand-stitching is the defining feature of the designer’s approach to her designs and the strong aesthetic appeal that is formed at the end-result. The combination of meticulous method and an innovative use of materials question the boundaries between art and design, Eleanor’s products not just formulated as an aesthetic product but also as an object of artistic worth.

This is reflected in the attention that Eleanor’s designs have received, including her MA graduate collection featured in Vogue Paris and showcased in exhibitions at major galleries including the Saatchi Gallery and the V&A in London. The new range is both part and inspirer of the ever growing sports luxe trend, where worn either layered or by themselves is both an easy and fashionable addition to the everyday white T-shirt.
