A dress made from £5,000 worth of coins and notes was spotted today during the first day of London Fashion Week, demonstrating a fashionable new use for cash as the UK continues its digital payments revolution. London is renowned for being ahead of the fashion curve and only last season, front-row guests were able to make an ‘instant purchase’ direct from the collection by holding a ring close to the tag of any item that took their fancy.

The team behind the Payfriendz social payments app is highlighting the cashless revolution in London by creating a ‘Little Cash Dress’. Styled on a shift mini dress, this original creation is made of 600 two-pound coins, which sprawl across the body. Delicate concertina sleeves made from £3,800 worth of £50 notes complete the £5,000 look, which celebrates the number of attendees set to grace the shows and parties this weekend.

The dress weighs an impressive 20kg and took over 15 hours to make. The dress was worn in an effort to highlight the change in public’s spending behaviour as the UK moves closer to going cashless. Commissioned by Payfriendz, the outfit showcases better uses for cash as we turn to tech to manage our finances.

The Little Cash Dress will be modelled throughout day one of London Fashion Week. It will then be deconstructed and given to charity. How much would you take? Download the Payfriendz app, add @cashlesssociety as a friend, and let them know what you would do for the chance to donate part of the dress to your cause. #cashdress
